Icariin, also known as icariin, is an 8-isopentenyl flavonoid glycoside compound extracted from the main active ingredient of Epimedium. Icariin can be extracted from the dried stems and leaves of plants such as Epimedium sagittatum, Epimedium pubescens, Epimedium wushanense and Epimedium koreana. It appears as pale yellow needle-shaped crystals and is soluble in ethanol and ethyl acetate, but insoluble in ether, benzene and chloroform. Icariin has a chemical formula of C33H40O15, a molecular weight of 676.66, a melting point of 223 to 225 degrees Celsius, and a boiling point of 948.5 degrees Celsius. It is a natural product of flavonol glycosides that has the ability to inhibit the activity of PDE5 and PDE4 (IC50 value is 432/73.50 μM), and is also a PPARα activator. |
