The plant extract Chrysanthemum is an extract of the dried flower head of the Asteraceae plant Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat. Its chemical components include flavonoids, volatile oils, triterpenoids, steroids, phenols, polysaccharides, and trace elements. The active ingredients mainly include  Chrysanthemum volatile oil, total flavonoids, luteolin and its glycosides. Chrysanthemum extract can improve myocardial nutrition, remove reactive oxygen species, enhance capillary resistance, and reduce the levels of fat and cholesterol in the blood; It also has certain effects on suppressing tumors, delaying aging, and enhancing human immunity. Used for symptoms such as wind heat and cold, headache and dizziness, redness and swelling of the eyes, blurred vision, sores, abscesses, and toxins.

 

The chemical components of  Chrysanthemum mainly include flavonoids, volatile oils, triterpenoids, steroids, phenols, polysaccharides, and trace elements. The active ingredients mainly include   Chrysanthemum volatile oil, total flavonoids, luteolin and its glycosides.

 

1.   Chrysanthemum is rich in flavonoids, with dry products containing up to 4.50% total flavonoids and extracts containing up to 78.46% total flavonoids. Its main ingredients include apigenin, luteolin, acacetin, hesperetin, apigenin 7-glucoside, luteolin-7-O - β - D-glucoside, acacetin-7-glucoside, hesperidin, gossypol pentamethyl ether, 5-hydroxy-3 '-4' -6,7-methoxyflavone, etc. 7-O - β - D-glucoside is the main flavonoid compound in chrysanthemums, which can be hydrolyzed in vivo to produce bioactive compounds such as luteolin and apigenin. The structural mother nucleus of flavonoids in Hangzhou white chrysanthemum mainly includes flavonoids (A), flavonols (B), and dihydroflavonoids (C), which are one of its main active components.

 

2. The volatile oil of Chrysanthemum morifolium has a special and rich aromatic odor. Researchers extracted the volatile oil from Chrysanthemum morifolium using steam distillation, and separated, analyzed, and identified it using GC/MS technology. 125 peaks were detected, and 59 compounds have been identified, mainly monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and their oxygen-containing derivatives, accounting for 61.74% of the total volatile oil. From the analysis results, the components with high quality scores include α - gingerol (8.99%), caryophyllene (7.86%), β - lanolin (4.59%), magnolol (4.14%), 2-methyl-1-pentene (3.36%), camphora (1.54%), camphor (1.40%), and bornyl acetate (1.21%).

 

3. Currently, a total of six triterpenoids and steroids have been isolated from Chrysanthemum morifolium, including 16 β, 28 dihydroxy quercetin ester, 16 β - hydroxy pseudodandelion sterol ester, 16 β, 22 α - dihydroxypseudodandelion sterol ester, pseudodandelion sterol, dandelion sterol, β - sitosterol, and triterpenoids and steroids from Chrysanthemum morifolium.

 

4. Phenolic acid components are widely present in  Chrysanthemum, mainly consisting of C6-C3 structured phenylpropanoids such as Lonicera japonica F, chlorogenic acid, 4-O-caffeoylquinic acid, 3,4-O-dicaffeoylquinic acid, 4,5-Odicaffeoylquinic acid, 3,5-Odicaffeoylquinic acid, 1,3-O-dicaffeoylquinic acid, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetone.

 

5. Other chrysanthemums also contain polysaccharides and trace elements. 1. Antioxidant effect The extract of Chrysanthemum morifolium can inhibit the apoptosis of calf aortic vascular smooth muscle cells (vsMc) and antioxidant effect in a concentration dependent manner, suggesting that the antioxidant effect of the extract of Chrysanthemum morifolium may be one of the mechanisms of its inhibition of VSMC apoptosis, and may play a certain role in preventing the late acute clinical complications of atherosclerosis.

2. Lipid lowering effect: Chrysanthemum exerts its lipid-lowering effect by increasing the liver's ability to absorb cholesterol. After taking Hangbaijiu decoction for 20 days, the rate of cholesterol uptake in rat liver was significantly accelerated under ex vivo circulation perfusion conditions. At the same time, Hangbaijiu could significantly reduce the levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides in rat serum.

3. Anti aging effect:  chrysanthemum extract has a significant protective and repairing effect on the decrease in red blood cell membrane fluidity caused by superoxide anions. In vitro experiments have shown that  chrysanthemum extract can enter the glycerol region of the red blood cell membrane and exert its effect. An increase in lipofuscin is also an important indicator of aging, and Hangbai Chrysanthemum can significantly reduce (or eliminate) the effect of lipofuscin.

4. Antibacterial effect: it has a complete inhibitory effect on seven Gram negative intestinal pathogenic bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Shigella sonnei, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella paratyphoid, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Vibrio cholerae, in vitro. It has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.

5. Anti inflammatory effect: Chrysanthemum extract can affect the permeability of mouse capillaries, increase capillary resistance, and thus have anti-inflammatory effects.

6. Antipyretic effect: it administered orally has an antipyretic effect on artificially feverish rabbits.

7. Antitumor effect: Dandelione type triterpenoids isolated from Chrysanthemum morifolium have significant inhibitory effects on mouse skin tumors and human tumor cell lines induced by 12 Chemicalbook-O-tetradecanoyl diterpenoid alcohol - β - ester (TPA), and their inhibitory activity is stronger than glycyrrhetinic acid (a known natural anti-tumor drug). Amdiol has extensive cytotoxic effects on human tumor cell lines and is a potential anti-tumor drug.

8. Antiviral effect: Through in vitro screening using the plaque formation method, it was found that Hangbai Chrysanthemum has varying degrees of inhibitory effects on herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), poliovirus, and measles virus. Compared with the blank group control, the plaque formation rate was reduced by 50%. In addition,

8 types of chrysanthemum flavonoids have inhibitory effects on H9 cell replication induced by acute HlV infection, among which acacetin-7-13-D-galactosyl (vanillin) is a new active ingredient against HIV and has relatively low toxicity.

9. The anti mutagenic effect was tested using simultaneous rapid experiments of anti mutagenicity and mutagenicity. Hangbai Chrysanthemum showed a similar effect to vitamin C (anti mutagenic positive control) with and without increasing mouse liver microsomes, that is, it has direct and indirect antagonistic effects on the mutagenic toxicity caused by mitomycin C.

10. Effects on the cardiovascular system (1) Positive inotropic effects: Chrysanthemum extract has shown positive inotropic effects on both isolated hearts and individual myocardial cells.
